What Can We Learn From Observed Temperature and Salinity Isopycnal Anomalies at Eddy Generation Sites? Application in the Tropical Atlantic Ocean

چکیده

Based on 18 years of satellite altimetry data and temperature/salinity (θ/S) profiles from Argo floats, we analyze the isopycnal θ/S anomalies (θ'/S') within newborn eddies in tropical Atlantic Ocean (TAO). Our results show that density-coordinates, both anticyclonic (AEs) cyclonic (CEs) can exhibit positive, negative, or nonsignificant θ'/S'. Almost half sampled do not have significant θ'/S' at their generation site. The other exhibits positive negative θ', up to ±0.5°C typically. More than 70% them a subsurface signature. Refined analyses vertical structure new-born three selected subregions dominance cold (warm) AEs likely due advection large-scale potential vorticity (PV) θ. PV is key parameter eddy dynamics. Isopycnal advection, friction diapycnal mixing be involved which vortices then emerge. However, it difficult evaluate mesoscale. In this study, propose combine process could its transformation ocean. We argue created by water-masses are associated with contrast, frictional forcing also creates but without modifying θ/S. Even though our remain qualitative, proposed diagnostics interest validate realistic models use anomaly sources.

What Can We Really Learn from Positron Flux ’anomalies’

We present a critical analysis of the observational constraints on, and of the theoretical modeling of, aspects of CR generation and propagation in the Galaxy, which are relevant for the interpretation of recent positron and anti-proton measurements. We give simple, analytic, model independent expressions for the secondary anti-proton flux, and an upper limit for the positron flux, obtained by ...

What Can We Learn from 21 Years of School Poisonings in New Zealand?

Background: Childhood poisoning is a significant international health concern. Very little is known about trends in exposures within schools and preschools. The objectives of this study were to investigate the data recorded by the New Zealand National Poisons Centre (NPC) on these types of exposures over a 21 year period (1989 to 2009) and to determine trends and propose strategies to reduce th...

What can we Learn from Anisotropic Temperature Factors ?

Brighter X-ray sources, sensitive area detectors and the use of cryogenic techniques enable the collection of atomic resolution (i.e. dmin < 1.2 Å [1]) data on an increasing number of protein crystals [2]. Such data provide a sound basis for the refinement of models with more parameters than previously acceptable. One possible approach is to replace the individual isotropic B-factor model by an...

Referring Expression Generation: What Can We Learn From Human Data?

In this talk, I reflect on what we can learn about the processes involved in the generation of referring expressions by looking at a corpus of human-produced data. We find that the data vastly underspecifies what might be involved algorithmically, although it does rule out a number of popular algorithms for referring expression generation as candidates for models of what people do. We posit an ...

What can we learn from hydrodynamic analysis at RHIC?

We can establish a new picture, the perfect fluid sQGP core and the dissipative hadronic corona, of the space-time evolution of produced matter in relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC. It is also shown that the picture works well also in the forward rapidity region through an analysis based on a new class of the hydro-kinetic model and that this is a manifestation of rapid increase of entr...
